Job Description

SUMMARY:  

 

The incumbent manages the communications and marketing office of NASA’s Technology Transfer program. 

This office handles all communications, in-reach, out-reach, and marketing for the program, including social media. Among the primary responsibilities of the office is researching, writing, and producing Spinoff, NASA’s print and online publication, which features successfully commercialized NASA technology. 

Work also includes overseeing design updates to the Spinoff website; interfacing with a broad audience ranging from NASA scientists, engineers, and public affairs staff to company executives and marketing personnel; and completing special projects as directed by the Technology Transfer program executive at NASA headquarters.

The communications director supervises a staff of six as well as freelancers. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • SUPERVISORY (40%): 
    • Prioritizes, schedules, and assigns work for the Spinoff Program Office in accordance with the statement of work requirements and priorities; trains and mentors staff and provides them with technical direction and opportunities for professional development
    • Interfaces directly and regularly with senior leadership, serving as the contract’s primary point of contact with NASA headquarters
    • Oversees graphic designer in the construction of every issue of Spinoff including theme, cover design, ancillary Spinoff products, as well as other projects as needed
    • Leads development of Spinoff website, working with graphic designer and software development team to ensure the user interface and back end achieve communications and database/archival goals.   
    • Represents Technology Transfer program’s communications and marketing team at regular meetings within the wider NASA community
    • Contributes to strategic development of Technology Transfer program branding, outreach materials, website design, message, etc.
    • Oversees posting to NASA Spinoff social media accounts and coordinates with social media managers across the Agency to amplify Technology Transfer content
    • Serves as hiring manager when recruiting new staff for the team 
  • EDITING (40%): 
    • Works closely with writers to edit and shape feature content for entire Technology Transfer portfolio, focusing on Spinoff but also including marketing materials for the Agency patent portfolio and software catalog, among other products
    • Works with program coordinator and/or writers to produce budgetary or other annual reports and presentations
  • WRITING (15%): 
    • Drafts press releases, social media posts, occasional features, and other content as needed for the Technology Transfer Program’s outreach efforts
  • OUTREACH (5%):
    • Attends occasional technical trade shows and conferences to obtain story leads and vendor contacts
    •  Participates in marketing activities, such as making occasional presentations or giving interviews about spinoff topics 
    •  Responds to inquiries from NASA and the public
Qualifications

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:   

  • Outstanding oral and written professional communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to nontechnical audiences
  • Demonstrated ability in planning, managing, and executing projects, especially in a team environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of constituencies, from program executives to communications colleagues.
  • Knowledge of the publishing environment, including magazines, social media, websites, brochures and marketing collateral, posters, etc.

Minimum 

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • At least four years of experience in writing and publication development
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

 Preferred 

  • Experience with supervising a small team of staff
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
