Job Description


In full coordination with the Information and Logistics Management Division act as a focal point for mechanical and general engineering designs, reviews and analyses.  Develops and implements studies and engineering analyses and designs for space flight projects.  Provides support to Project Offices as required.   




  • Provides mechanical and general engineering expertise to the Project Logistics Team and the Information and Logistics Management Division to accomplish space flight project mission objectives.  This includes technical review of integrated logistics documents such as transportation plans, instrumentation annexes and other documents associated with the movement of space flight material
  • Provides technical oversight of instrumentation of containers and space flight vehicles during transportation and on-site movements.
  • Supports the Information and Logistics Management Division and space flight projects in operational matters as requested, conducts studies for Center and operational functions for safe and efficient handling of space flight material.
  • Assists the Information and Logistics Management Division in the development and review of mission support sections of Project Plans.  Ensures the plan identifies and addresses engineering elements required by the Mission Operations Plan.
  • Maintains currency with state-of-the-art mechanical and general engineering functional areas and provides guidance to internal organizations concerning changes that will affect or benefit operations.
  • Interfaces with multi-disciplined team members to identify requirements, generate procedures, statements of work, plans and work orders to accomplish mission objectives. 
  • Generates shipping container specifications, designs, drawing packages, and oversees fabrication of specialized timber shipping containers fabricated at GSFC
  • Specify, install, monitor and operate instrumentation systems during flight hardware transport. Utilize these systems to ensure shipping environment remains within specified parameters for shock/vibration, temperature and relative humidity during transport. 
  • Acts as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for transportation systems. Develop expert knowledge of transporter system operation including Environmental Control Systems (ECS), diesel generator sets, instrumentation systems, hydraulic systems and pneumatic systems.
  • Generates after action summary reports including summation of data collected during transport, transport route, lessons learned, etc.
  •  Interfaces with Flight Project analysts to determine instrumentation sensor placement and perform data analysis as requested including but not limited to; acceleration time history analysis, frequency analysis (PSD and SRS) and temperature/relative humidity charting. 


  • Physically capable of climbing on trucks, trailers, and work similar to packing and crating duties.
  • Be able to travel for up to 3 weeks duration.  Travel may include overseas and cross country flights or cross country road trips.  Eligible to obtain a valid US passport and must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Able to pass security and background checks as required by Goddard Space Flight Center.


The work to be performed by this position requires extensive interface with internal and external organizations, including space flight projects to determine and identify the nature and scope of the instrumentation and project support work to be accomplished.  The assignments in direct support of space flight projects require the development of engineering concepts and techniques as well as integrated logistics support plans.  The incumbent must have at least five years experience in Mechanical Engineering or aerospace industry practices of which five years of practical application of mechanical engineering concepts. 

  • Proficiency in Pro Engineer parametric modeling software or equivalent is required.
  • Proficiency in National Instruments LabView is preferred.
  • Familiarity with industrial electricity and power is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with HVAC concepts and operations is preferred.
  • Familiarity with acceleration, temperature and relative humidity data collection and analysis is preferred.
  • Transportation and logistics experience is preferred.



BS degree is required in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited University.
